The Science Behind Trauma-Informed Yoga

Yoga has long been recognised for its numerous physical and mental health benefits. From increased flexibility and strength to reduced stress and anxiety, the practice of yoga has the power to transform our lives. But did you know that yoga can also be a powerful tool for healing trauma?

Trauma-informed yoga is a specialised approach that recognises the profound connection between the body and mind. It aims to release trapped trauma and promote holistic healing. But what is the science behind trauma-informed yoga? How does it work? One of the key mechanisms behind the healing power of trauma-informed yoga lies in its ability to regulate the nervous system. Trauma often leaves individuals stuck in a state of hyperarousal or hypoarousal, where their nervous system is either constantly on high alert or shut down. Trauma-informed yoga helps to restore balance to the nervous system by activating the parasympathetic response, also known as the "rest and digest" mode. During trauma-informed yoga practice, slow and mindful movements are emphasised, along with deep breathing techniques. These practices activate the vagus nerve, which plays a crucial role in regulating the autonomic nervous system. By stimulating the vagus nerve, trauma-informed yoga helps to calm the body and mind, reducing anxiety and promoting a sense of safety and relaxation. Another important aspect of trauma-informed yoga is its focus on embodiment. Trauma often disconnects individuals from their bodies, leading to a sense of dissociation and disconnection. Trauma-informed yoga helps individuals reconnect with their bodies, fostering a sense of safety and empowerment. Through gentle movements and mindful awareness, trauma-informed yoga encourages individuals to tune into their bodily sensations, emotions, and boundaries. This process of embodiment allows individuals to develop a greater sense of self-awareness and self-regulation, empowering them to navigate their trauma in a safe and supportive environment. The benefits of trauma-informed yoga extend beyond the individual level. Research has shown that trauma-informed yoga can also have a positive impact on communities and society as a whole. By promoting compassion, empathy, and understanding, trauma-informed yoga helps to create a more compassionate and trauma-informed society.
